Labour Day weekend @ Crater Lake - Day 1

Day 1 - 5th Sept 09

It was drizzling in the morning when 8 of us set off at 4am+. We stopped for a hearty breakfast at Pig'N Pancake, and with a little bit of traffic jam, we arrived at Diamond Lake campsite at around 3pm.

The rain had stopped by then but the sky was still gloomy. We started setting up our tents. I confess! I did not help in a single bit of setting up the tent. BUT it was because I was busy with preparing the food for our bbq dinner.. hehe

We had a sumptuous spread of food prepared for bbqing. Chicken wings, yakitori, kalbi beef, pork chops, bacon, hotdogs, (marshmallow & corns) were all marinated in advance and brought along using the cooler box. Nothing stops us from having good bbq food even if we're out in the "wild"!

While the guys tried to figure out how to use the groundsheet to shield us from the rain, the ladies tried to get the fire started on the charcoal grill.... We had difficulty... despite the fact that we were using lighter fluid.. In the end Junyong had to take over. :p

Jingying decided we needed a real campfire, so she went to pick firewood with Derrick and we started an authentic campfire. Mainly to keep us warm because the weather was starting to get cold...

After a while, Junyong got bored with cooking food on the charcoal grill and he decided to use skewers to cook chicken wings using the "Stephen Chow's way" which is using the heat over open fire. Everyone laughed at him initially but when the chicken wings turned out great - crispy skin and tender meat, they started to do it the same way too. keke!

By the time, we were done with cooking and eating. It was night-time. We decided to have an early night since we had to wake up early to travel to Crater Lake National Park the next morning.

We went on to have a nice hot shower. Yes, nice hot shower. No powder bath or having to shower in cold water, luckily! And we went to "bed".

It was "deluxe camping" as a friend described.

Other than having hot showers, it was also because we were all sleeping in sleeping bags which were on top of queen-sized air mattress which have been inflated and placed in the tents. No cold hard camping gound for me. hehee

The temperature dropped in the morning when it started drizzling. Fortunately, there wasn't any leaking into the tents but I had to bury my whole face in the sleeping bag because it was so cold!

I also woke up several times through the night when I heard rustling sounds outside. I'm glad they're just leaves and the wind, not wild animals. :x

Oh wow, your trip looks so fun! The last time I went camping was luxury camping too. We even had electricity! Unfortunately Mr K thought we had the heater on when we didn't so we were freezing through the whole night.

Only realised in the morning that the heater wasn't on. -_-
